The Access & Participation Office The Access and Participation Of fi ce provides a range of supports and services for students applying to GMIT through the Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) and from underrepresented groups. The Of fi ce also co-ordinates speci fi c Access Scholarships and the Programme for Access to Higher Education (PATH) in GMIT. HEAR What is it? HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) is a college scheme which offers places on reduced points and extra college support to school leavers from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are resident in the Republic of Ireland. HEAR applicants must meet a range of fi nancial, social and cultural indicators to be considered for a reduced points place and extra college support. Who should apply to HEAR? HEAR is for school leavers under the age of 23 as of 1st of January in the year of applying and who are resident in the Republic of Ireland. HEAR applications can only be made online. No means other than by way of online submission of a HEAR application form will be accepted. If you apply for HEAR and meet the application criteria (i.e. are deemed eligible for HEAR) you may be offered a place even if you don’t have enough Leaving Certi fi cate points for your preferred course.
Mature Students The Access and Disability service also provides supports for mature students in the following areas:
• Assistance with the application process (CAO) • Information and advice on sources of funding • Study skills workshops and courses covering - Effective study techniques - Effective note taking - Essay writing - Examination techniques - IT (beginners) Pre-Entry Preparation Programme: Joint Foundation Programmes with NUI Galway
GMIT, in co-operation with NUI Galway, provides two foundation programmes for mature students wishing to apply to courses in either higher education Institute. The Foundation course in Science and Engineering and the Foundation course in Business and Commerce run two evenings per week and some Saturday mornings. Successful candidates have the option of applying to either GMIT or NUIG for a course of their choice, subject to entry constraints.

How to apply for HEAR? 1. Apply online to CAO by 5.15pm on the 1st February 2022.
2. You must indicate in your CAO application no later than 5.15pm on 1st March 2022 that you wish to apply for the HEAR scheme and you must fully and correctly complete all elements of the HEAR form (the HEAR form is a part of your CAO application). 3. Submit relevant evidence in support of your application to arrive at CAO no later than 5.15pm on the 15th March 2022.
