Why study Accounting? Accountants are required by every business in every industry, providing expert business advice as well as managing the businesses economic activities and financial information. This three-year, Level 8 course offers a direct pathway into a full-time career in accounting, and it also offers graduates opportunities in a range of business careers including, financial services and management consulting. Lecturers on this course are highly qualified professional accountants with considerable lecturing experience, some acting as examiners and lecturers for the professional accounting bodies. They maintain very close links with all of the professional bodies, as well as with industry. The course is regularly updated, in accordance with professional body and employer requirements.
What are my career opportunities? The course prepares students for employment in the accounting function of industry and commerce and with firms of professional accountants as well as other financial services employers including multi-national companies. There are many different types of accounting roles including financial accounting, management accounting, auditing, and tax accounting. Today accountants play a very strategic role within businesses.

David McNamara Upon graduating from GMIT, I began my training with the accountancy firm Russell Brennan Keane, in their Athlone office. I am currently in the midst of preparing for upcoming CAP2 Chartered Accountant exams. I can definitely say that the course in
GMIT provided me with an excellent foundation for meeting the demands of my role as a trainee accountant. The course is quite comprehensive, everything that I am studying now at professional level has previously been covered during my time in GMIT. My favourite module to study was Management Accounting. I liked the challenge they posed, using logic and numerical competency to solve problems. The big benefit for me in studying in GMIT is the smaller class sizes. This lends itself towards a more focused learning environment. Nothing comes easy in the Accounting course, but a small group of people working hard and getting the best out of themselves made my journey in GMIT an enjoyable one.
