Maeve Keane Growing up on our family farm in Waterford I have always had a passion for agriculture, but I also loved studying business. Studying Rural Enterprise & Agri-Business in GMIT Mountbellew Agriculture College allowed me to do both. It is a small agri-college where it was easy to settle in and get to know everyone. I think this made the transition between 2nd and 3rd level so much easier.

During first year we were bussed into the main campus in Galway GMIT for one day each week for labs, lectures and to avail of other student support services. One of the big attractions of the course for me was in second year we went out for a full semester on industry placement For mine, I went to the Teagasc office in Clonmel. There I got to work alongside the advisors, meeting farmers and completing paperwork. There are a lot of schemes that Teagasc are involved with. I organised discussion groups for farmers and advisors and travelled to the other Teagasc offices in Tipperary. I really enjoyed learning about the different schemes, such as GLAS, KT, and how to fill out farmer's Basic Farm Payment forms. After my work placement I start my third year on my main GMIT Campus in Galway. While I thought I was comfortable there it definitely exceeded my expectations. There were so many clubs and societies to choose from and get involved with. This was a great way to meet my new friends from outside of my course. Because GMIT lecture sizes are small, lecturers know everyone by name and are always there to give you a hand. It was a huge benefit knowing all my lecturers, and them knowing me, when I was struggling with assignments or understanding lectures. I am glad I chose to study in GMIT. If not, I know I wouldn’t have had the skills and motivation to have attained my current role as a Sales Account Manager with AgriLand Media LTD , all before officially graduating.
