Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Civil Engineering (Level 8) Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering (Level 7)

Why study Civil Engineering? Civil engineering is probably the best-known type of engineering because the work of the civil engineer is clearly visible to us every day. Civil engineering is all about creating, improving and protecting the environment in which we live. It involves the planning, design and construction of facilities that we require for everyday living, industry and transport. As a civil engineer, you will have a creative, diverse, and challenging career and will be making a real contribution to the needs of both modern and developing societies all over the world. Students will have the opportunity to take a four-month Industry

What are my career opportunities? Graduates will possess the technical and managerial skills necessary to enter careers as Civil Engineers including planning, design, construction, operation or maintenance of the built environment and global infrastructure. Entry Requirements In addition to the Level 7 and Level 8 general entry requirements, candidates must have a minimum LC grade of O4/H7 in Mathematics. Recognition by Professional Bodies The course is accredited by Engineers Ireland to enable graduates to gain the title of ‘Associate Engineer’ (AEng). The courses are also accredited by the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE). In addition, the Level 8 course is fully recognised by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) so that graduates can become full Chartered Members (MCIOB) after appropriate professional experience.

Student experience

Declan Coll Civil Engineering is a broad degree and offers the potential for students to enter into many different career paths. The diverse range of subjects in GMIT allowed me to understand many of the different sectors of engineering and see the career opportunities available. Studying in GMIT allowed me to develop problem solving and analytical skills which are crucial for engineers. The balance of theory and practical work is a major advantage of the course. It helped me to put the theory into context and better understand the topics. I spent my work placement semester with McAleer & Rushe in the UK, which provided me with extremely valuable experience and helped me in securing my first job. I really enjoyed my time in GMIT, and would highly recommend it to any student considering civil engineering.
