OFFERS Standard Applicants

First round offers will be made by CAO in August following the issue of the Leaving Certi fi cate results. Each applicant will be offered the highest course preference for which they are quali fi ed on the basis of points obtained in the Leaving Certi fi cate. Mature Applicants Offers for the quota of places will be made by CAO in early July. Further offers may be made later subject to the availability of places. Defer Policy (CAO Applicants) An applicant who receives an offer of a place may seek deferral to the next academic year. Candidates may defer for any reason other than to attend another full-time third level course of study or to repeat the Leaving Certi fi cate. The granting of a deferral is at the discretion of the institute. Defer Procedure 1. Do NOT accept the offer in the manner shown on the CAO offer notice. 2. Email immediately to the Admissions of fi cer, admissions@gmit.ie requesting to apply for a defer. The admissions of fi ce will then provide you with a deferral application form. • The deferral application formmust be completed at least two days before the “reply date” shown on the CAO offer notice. Deferral requests are considered on a case by case basis and a range of factors will be taken into consideration including demand for the programme, nature of the offer and reasons set out by the applicant. Applicants will be required to provide the reason for their request. Deferrals may be granted on the basis of certi fi ed illness, fi nancial hardship, family bereavement, or psychological, emotional or social problems. Formal documentation from appropriately certi fi ed professionals must be provided. In order to ensure adequate places for next year’s applicants, there is a limit, normally 5% of places, on the number of deferrals which can be granted on each programme. Other than in exceptional circumstances deferrals will not be granted for late CAO round offers, mature entry to high demand programmes or for QQI FE nursing offers. • The Admissions Of fi ce will communicate the decision to the applicant by email within one week of the application being received. 3. The letter or email must arrive in the Admissions Of fi ce, GMIT at least two days before the reply date shown on the offer notice. 4. In order to take up the deferred place, the applicant must re-apply to CAO by 1st February of the succeeding year, placing the deferred course as the fi rst and only preference on the application form. The applicant should also indicate their deferral by ticking the deferred place indicator box on their application. 5. You will breach the conditions of your deferred place if you enter more than the single deferred course code on your application. GMIT Internal Transfer Guidelines (Students admitted through the CAO) 1. The student, prior to submitting a transfer application must speak to the Head of Department responsible for the course they are attending and the Head of Department of the course they wish to transfer to. 2. The Transferee must have, at a minimum, the entry requirements and cut-off points for the course being transferred to. 3. Any transfer would result in the creation of an additional place on the desired course with the exception of Nursing degrees. Transfers into Nursing courses are not permitted. 4. Special consideration will be given to transfer requests based on Health and Safety, disability grounds or other extenuating circumstances. 5. In certain circumstances GMIT will facilitate students who are completing Year 1 or higher of a course who have identi fi ed that they wish to transfer to another course in GMIT. Please note points two and three above must be adhered to and the student must have completed and passed Stage 1 of the course of which they are registered. 6. The transfer application is not fi nally agreed until the Admissions Of fi cer has con fi rmed that the student meets the

entry points and requirements and has passed Stage 1 of the current course (if applicable). 7. All transfer requests must be submitted by the end of Week 4 of the fi rst semester annually.
