Sona Smedkova As a first-year student on the BA Contemporary Art course, I was introduced to the course’s main departments. Various modules took place throughout the year and covered all areas of 2D and 3D. I found it hard to select my pathway, as I found all were appealing. With great support from the lecturing staff, I opted for the 2D pathway for the rest of the course.

The next three years were well designed, from structured lectures to more independent learning approaches. All students, including myself were guided to become confident, self-directed practitioners. With continuous practical and research-based assignments, interesting seminars, and workshops in the areas of Professional Practice, History of Art and Visual Culture, all students gained important research and academic writing skills. During my studies, I was supported in my multidisciplinary workflow, and was able to use all the departments necessary to create my work. I felt driven by challenging debates during regular critiques which often helped me to comprehend artwork from different and fresh angles. The access to an extensive library and the art collection held in it, made artists research and my interest in neuroscience delightful. The CCAM community made college a time full of joy and I felt supported by all the lecturing, administrative, technicians and caretaking staff throughout the 4-year course.
