GMIT CAMPUS LOCATIONS

Spread out over counties Galway and Mayo in the west of Ireland, our five campuses offer unique locations in which to study. Our students thrive because they can experience an excellent study/life balance, all at a reasonable cost of living.

GALWAY CITY

Galway city is home to the main GMIT Galway campus, and GMIT’s Centre for Creative Arts and Media. Nationally and internationally renowned as the friendliest city in Europe (Travel + Leisure 2015), Galway is so much more than a scenic city-by-the-sea. Galway has a spirited population of 75,000 people, with students making up at least a quarter of that. Although the 4th largest city in Ireland, Galway has lost none of its medieval charm. Everything from Michelin-starred restaurants, to open air markets, pubs, theatres, live music events, and an eclectic bunch of personalities, keeps Galway city buzzing, by day and by night. And when the vibrancy of city life is all too much, why not escape for a break and head a little further west to Connemara, the most unspoiled countryside you will ever see. Or, head south to explore the Burren and Cliffs of Moher in County Clare.

GMIT Centre for the Creative Arts & Media (CCAM), Monivea Road, Galway

GALWAY CITY A Destination for Creators and Artists

Galway city has long been known as a centre for creativity, arts, culture, music, drama and more. The city is alive with arts and cultural festivals, including Galway Film Fleadh and the Galway International Arts Festival in July, The Cúirt International Festival of Literature in April, and Baboró, an International Arts Festival for Children, in October. In 2014, Galway was designated a UNESCO City of Film in recognition of its strong media output. Galway is now one of only eight film cities in the world to achieve this much sought-after status. A city with such a strong creative ethos is the perfect setting for GMIT’s Centre for the Creative Arts and Media, providing students with the opportunity to engage with creative communities all year round.

GMIT’s Centre for the Creative Arts & Media (CCAM) is also located close to Galway City centre, on the Monivea Road. A GMIT campus since 1994, CCAM is based in beautiful old buildings that date back to the 1930s. The award-winning library is constructed with Irish oak displaying beautiful craftsmanship in keeping with surrounding architecture. CCAM is a hive of creative activity, and is home to a number of organisations and enterprises alongside the courses in: • Design (graphic design & illustration, animation & game design, industrial design, and fashion & textile design) • Contemporary Art (incorporating painting, print making, photography, ceramics, sculpture, digital media) • Film & Documentary (editing, screenwriting, production design, 4D design, audio production and cinematography) • The new teaching course in Art, Design and Graphics.

Maintaining and Protecting the GMIT Student Experience During COVID-19

During the 2021/22 academic year GMIT staff are well prepared to deliver a great learning experience for all our students. Lectures will be online, with on-site activities for practical work and some tutorials. We are planning for a return to normal face-to-face delivery from September 2022, subject to HSE and the Department of Education and Skills guidelines.

The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff is our priority. We continue to follow the advice of the HSE and the Department of Education and Skills about ongoing protective measures against the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Please refer to www.gmit.ie/covid for up to date information and FAQs for students.

Ag Cothú agus ag Cosaint Eispéaras na Mac Léinn i GMIT le linn Covid-19

Le linn na bliana acadúla 2021/22 tá foireann GMIT sár-ullmhaithe chun eispéaras foghlama den scoth a chur ar fáil dár mic léinn ar fad. Beidh léachtaí ar líne, le gníomhaíochtaí ar an gcampas d’obair phraiticiúil agus do roinnt ranganna teagaisc. Tá muid ag ullmhú agus ag súil go mbeidh muid ag filleadh ar an ngnáthsheachadadh aghaidh ar aghaidh ó mhí Mheán Fómhair 2022, ag brath ar threoirlínte

FSS (Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte) agus na Roinne Oideachais agus Scileanna. Is é an rud is tábhachtaí dúinn ná sláinte agus sábháilteacht na mac léinn agus an lucht foirne. Tá muid fós ag cloí le comhairle FSS agus na Roinne Oideachais agus Scileanna maidir le bearta cosanta leanúnacha le srian a choinneáil ar scaipeadh an choróinvíris (Covid-19).

Tá eolas suas chun dáta agus CCanna (ceisteanna coitianta) do mhic léinn le fáil ar www.gmit.ie/covid

Face Covering Please be advised that you must bring your own reusable face covering when attending or visiting GMIT during the next academic year (2021-2022). Information on the use of face coverings, and instructions on how to make your own face covering, is available at https://www2.hse.ie/conditions/coronavirus/face-masks-disposable-gloves.html

STUDENT LIFE AT GMIT

Life in GMIT - The Student Experience

Studying in GMIT is not just about the quali fi cation and skills you graduate with. Sometimes, it is the experiences you have along the way that will ultimately shape you as a graduate and as a person.

STUDENT COMMUNITY GMIT has a vibrant community of over 6,700 students. Students come from all over Ireland, and from overseas locations such as China, Saudi Arabia and mainland Europe.

FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT You will find that GMIT offers students a friendly learning environment, with an excellent rapport between students and lecturers. Smaller class sizes gives you a chance to get to know your lecturers and classmates well and facilitate learning.

STUDENT SUPPORT Adjusting to life in college can be one of the biggest differences between second and third level education. GMIT has a number of supports in place to help you adjust to college life: • PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) is a scheme specifically for first year students. This scheme helps first year students to support each other and learn co- operatively under the guidance of a trained student from the second, third, or fourth year of the same course. • Academic supports are available at GMIT in the form of the Academic Writing Centre, Maths Support Centre, and Information Skills Training. • Access & Disability, Access & Participation, Student Health Unit, Chaplaincy, Counselling, Careers services and the Students Services administrative support team are available to make the transition to college easier and provide ‘peace of mind’ that support is available if you need it. • The Students’ Union also assists students in areas such as grants, timetables, exams, lectures, personal issues, welfare, accommodation, and more.

STUDENT CLUBS, SOCIETIES AND ACTIVITIES One of the most exciting, rewarding and fun aspects of GMIT is the opportunity to become involved in some of the various clubs and societies on campus. Getting involved with a club or society connects you to people and opportunities, widens your circle of friends, and can help you grow in confidence. There are over 70 clubs to choose from – so make sure you join at least one.

VOLUNTEERING & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT GMIT students are involved in a range of civic engagement and volunteering projects across all major disciplines. Students have an opportunity to undertake a five-credit module in Civic Engagement, which appoints students in responsible and challenging actions in a range of non-profit organisations. Students can also apply for the GMIT President's Thrive Award for Volunteering. To be considered for this award, students must volunteer for 25 hours which can be done with outside organisations or on certain initiatives within GMIT. GMIT liaises with Volunteer Galway to offer volunteering opportunities for this award.

STUDENT RESOURCES GMIT campuses are well equipped to make sure that you have everything you need on site – from libraries, sports facilities and IT centres, to the ever-popular meeting point of the canteen/coffee shop. The Dublin Road campus in Galway City also has a number of training restaurants, where you can enjoy three-course meals at discounted prices.

HEALTHY CAMPUS promotes and facilitates Positive Health and Wellbeing activities amongst the GMIT Community. Healthy Campus consists of a large working group made up of staff and students from our five campuses. We have five subgroups assigned to rollout initiatives, share information and develop policies relating to Nutrition, Physical Health, Mental Health, Sexual Health and Substance Use. In January 2020, GMIT became a Clean Air (no Smoking or Vaping) Campus.
