New for the upcoming academic year we have updated our scholarship to include Gold, Silver and Bronze levels for individual athletes. This now means individual athletes can receive scholarships ranging from gym-only and support services up to €12,000 in services and funding. For team sports we have introduced a level 1 and level 2, whereby athletes can again receive scholarships ranging from gym- only and support services, up to €12,000 in services and funding. Our mission is to pursue sporting excellence through personal development and teamwork, providing opportunities and resources for student-athletes that develop strong character, academic skills, leadership skills and career potential. High-Performance Sport NUI Galway has a very long and proud tradition in High-Performance Sport. The university has produced athletes who have competed at the highest level both domestically and internationally. In fact NUI Galway students have competed at world, Olympic, and Paralympic level. We are very proud of our relationships with the National Governing Bodies of sport. Our High-Performance Pathway looks to create strong links with the these, so our athletes are well prepared for the next step in their sporting journey. We are also very lucky to have coaches within the university that also coach national squads. At present the university

has athletes competing at an international level in sports such as athletics, women’s soccer, rowing, sailing, archery, boxing and basketball. Some of these athletes will be hoping to compete in the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games. We are also very lucky to have coaches who also coach national squads. Recent Sporting Achievements Rowing NUI Galway has one of the country’s most successful rowing clubs winning multiple national championships as well as having members compete at world and Olympic levels. Currently the club has a number of rowers training with the Irish senior and U23 squads. Gaelic Sports Over the last two seasons, the university teams have gotten to the latter stages of the Fitzgibbon and Sigerson Cups, and the camogie team won the Purcell Cup in 2017. Athletics Recently NUI Galway has seen a big improvement in the performances of the track and field team. University squads are now competing for national honours at intervarsity and club level. Several of our athletes are now also involved with national squads. We are very lucky to have two coaches that are also involved at national level. Hockey Hockey has improved tremendously in the university in recent years. The women’s hockey team enjoyed incredible success, winning the Connacht Cup in 2019, and also competing in the National Hockey League on a weekly basis— against the best national teams.
