Sports Sport at NUI Galway recognises the relationship between academic performance, health and well-being. The Sport and Recreation Unit has a mission to promote participation in sport and physical activities by all students and staff, and to support higher standards of performance in sport for elite athletes and teams within NUI Galway. Over 6,000 students in NUI Galway are participating in weekly sporting activities, and 43% of these students are competing in a new sport for the very first time. The Presidents’ Cup is an innovative participation programme which allows you to try new sports, get active and integrate into life at NUI Galway. There is a sport for everyone and we strive to ensure we help you find it. NUI Galway boasts outstanding sports and recreational resources. Indoor international standard facilities include: • a 600-square-metre sports complex; • a 25-metre, 6-lane swimming pool; • a National League basketball arena; • a 130-piece cardiovascular gym; • fitness studios; • a high-performance testing lab; • a high-performance gym; • squash and racquetball courts; • a competition-style climbing wall. O utdoor amenities include: • an eight-lane synthetic, international standard track, with jumping and throwing facilities; • a complex catering for Gaelic games, rugby, soccer, hockey and cross-country; • 11 grass pitches; • a synthetic hockey pitch; • a gym; • floodlit artificial surfaces for multi-sports; • tennis courts. 50 active and vibrant sports and recreational clubs

The university’s river-side location ensures water sports clubs are very active: you can get involved in rowing, kayaking, windsurfing, sub-aqua activities, and more. Joining and participating in a sports club is a part of the overall student experience, and it is through your active participation in the sports clubs and recreational programmes that you will make new friends and learn life-long skills. Scholarships We seek to enhance and progress our long and successful sporting tradition into the future by providing elite student athletes and targeted sports with a holistic support programme. Our support structures are designed to support our elite athletes in all aspects of their lives. We liaise closely with all National Governing Bodies to provide the best possible support to our athletes who aim for domestic and international success. Our athletes have competed at Olympic Games, World University Games, World Championships, Rugby 6 Nations, and at inter-county level in all GAA Codes.
