The MSc in Cancer Research programme provides hands-on training in laboratory research for graduates who wish to specialise in the field of cancer research. 2. The programme provides both a broad and in-depth theoretical foundation in cancer biology, combined with extensive research laboratory skills and practical experience. 3. The knowledge and skills gained enable graduates to pursue careers as research scientists in academia, in the medical field or in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical sector.

Cancer Research (Structured Master’s: Re search)

Your Course The MSc in Cancer Research is a Structured Research Master ’s course, meaning that approximately one-third of the course is taught material and two-thirds is laboratory research. The taught modules are taught by experts in each topic from different academic disciplines and structured in a way that ensures that our students receive comprehensive and overarching knowledge of cancer biology. The laboratory research will encompass two full semesters. After an induction phase, our students work on one research project from January to September. This research experience teaches a broad range of research skills, and state-of-the-art technologies in cancer research, and provides experience in experimental design, data interpretation, and data presentation. Career Opportunities The MSc in Cancer Research provides the knowledge and skills to go on to study for a PhD and pursue an academic career, to take on specialist registrar training in medical and academic environments, or follow a career in the pharmacological and/or biotechnology industries. Our graduates are sought after by academic research groups looking for PhD students, as well as pharmaceutical and biomedical companies. Most of our graduates secure jobs within six months of graduation. Minimum Entry Requirements Graduates who have a Level 8, honours BSc degree (First Class or Second Class Honours, H1, H2.1, H2.2) in a relevant biological, biochemical or biomedical science field (e.g., pharmacology, biotechnology, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics) will be eligible to apply for this programme. Medical graduates with honours grade will also be eligible to apply. If an applicant has a lower than honours grade BSc degree qualification (i.e., a Level 7 BSc), but at least three years’ relevant work experience (e.g., molecular biology/cell biology/ biochemistry laboratory technician, biotechnology industry research laboratory staff, etc.), a special case for admission will be considered. International students, whose first language is not English, will be required to prove their English competency through their school leaving or matriculation examination or by achieving the minimum standard in a recognised English language test, as outlined in the NUI Galway entry requirement documentation.
