Health Promotion (Cardiovascular Health and Diabetes Prevention) Your Course The Postgraduate Certificate in Health Promotion offers students a unique opportunity to further their knowledge of cardiovascular health and ‘Type 2’ Diabetes prevention. The programme has been developed in partnership with Croí, the West of Ireland Cardiology Foundation, the Irish Heart Foundation and Diabetes Ireland. It is particularly suited to health professionals working in nursing, public health, pharmacy, physiotherapy, medicine, and the health and weight loss industries. Designed for healthcare professionals, the programme equips students with an in-depth understanding of how to critically assess the evidence base, understand national and international approaches to the promotion of cardiovascular health and the prevention of diabetes, and appreciate the role of advocacy in influencing health and environmental (public) policies. Course participants will gain skills and competencies for effective implementation of health promotion interventions and in project management. This is a blended learning programme with the online delivery of course material for self -directed learning accompanied by on-campus face-to-face workshops. Workshops are delivered on campus at NUI Galway one day per month. In 2020–2021, the programme may be delivered predominantly online with limited face-to-face contact and on campus attendance expected from students. This change is in line with university guidelines developed in relation to Government guidance on COVID-19 restrictions. Extra support and guidance will be provided to all students in order to optimise utilisation and engagement with online learning platforms . Career Opportunities The communication and facilitation skills taught on the course have been highlighted by previous students as being a particularly important element of the course, as well as the skills learned in planning, designing, implementing and evaluating a health promotion programme. Some of our past students work in national organisations such as the Irish Heart Foundation and Diabetes Ireland. Previous students of this course with healthcare qualifications have found it broadened their understanding of the of socio-ecological determinants of health, and as such has informed the approach they took to tackling noncommunicable diseases in the workplace and community. Minimum Entry Requirements 1. A primary degree. 2.
