Why study Quantity Surveying & Construction Economics? As the businessperson of the construction world the Quantity Surveyor is a mix of an Accountant, a Solicitor and a Building Manager. Quantity Surveyors have expertise in cost planning and controlling of construction projects, estimating, procurement, tendering and contracts administrative processes. In Year 3, a four-month work placement provides an opportunity for practical learning for each student. Graduates of the Level 8 Programme are provided with the academic qualification necessary to commence the process of becoming a Professional Quantity Surveyor (Chartered Surveyor). The programme provides highly sought after and valuable specialisations, giving its graduates a clear edge in the employment market.
What are my career opportunities? Graduates find employment within Building, Civil Engineering or Building Services Consultancy Practices / Contractors, Sub-Contractors, Facilities Management or Insurance Companies, Local Authorities, Government Departments, State/Semi-state Organisations, property divisions of the Banking Sector & Utility Providers. Recognition by Professional Bodies The Level 8 Programme is fully accredited at Professional Level by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI), The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors in the UK (RICS) and the Chartered Association of Building Engineers (CABE).

Sinead Dyra In secondary school I had a great interest in
Construction. GMIT offers several construction courses but the course that really stood out for me was Quantity Surveying. I opted for Level 8, which is a four-year honours degree course. The class numbers were small which helped for the practical classes. The lecturers were very friendly and extremely helpful and had no
problem answering questions that arose. Most of the modules contained continuous assessment, which eased the pressure for end-of-year exams. GMIT itself is very inviting and has a great atmosphere. The college also has many societies and clubs and there is no problem when it comes to meeting people and making friends. The facilities within the college are excellent, such as the IT Centre and library. The Quantity Surveying course in GMIT includes a 16-week work placement. I completed my work placement in JJ Rhatigan’s in Galway City during semester two of my third year. The skills and knowledge I gained within class were further developed whilst on placement. I found the cost management of building services, which includes mechanical and electrical services, a very interesting and enjoyable module. I am currently exploring my options of doing a Masters in Project Management or to travel abroad and work as a Quantity Surveyor.
