Student experience

Fergal O’Brien I chose this programme because I always had a keen interest in construction and the built environment, and wanted to pursue a career in this industry. The course has provided me with the necessary qualifications and skills to do so. I found my time at GMIT very enjoyable and rewarding. All modules from first year right through to final year prepare students for the working world. All of the lecturers are extremally knowledgable, approachable and with a wide range of experience, they prepare students for a career in the built environment. As part of my third-year work experience I travelled to London where I worked on a large residential refurbishment project. This was very enjoyable and gave me a great focus to return for my final year and achieve the highest grade possible. Once I had completed the degree I travelled to the United States on a graduate visa where I am now working in San Diego, CA as a junior construction manager. After my time in the US I will return to Ireland where I hope to progress to a senior management position. I'm really grateful for the education and experiences I received during my time in GMIT.

Sean Milner In school I liked practical classes like metalwork and woodwork, but I am dyslexic and generally disliked school, studying and all that goes with that. When thinking about going to college GMIT seemed like a good option for its mixture of lectures, practical classes and work placement opportunities. While I started out in college on one course, after spending my summer in

• Building Economics • Project Management • Dissertation

New York on a J1 working in construction, I knew I had found my path and decided to change my course to Construction Management. Time in college goes by so quickly and it is important to enjoy it but remember it is a balancing act between the academic and the social aspects! The lecturers were always so approachable and supportive in class and for projects, I found this helpful. As a dyslexic student there are so many supports available to you, from help with course work to read-write software and extra time as exam assistance. No issue is too big or small, you only need to ask. One of the highlights of the course was my work placement with JJ Rhatigan & Co as a Junior Site Manager on the Presentation College in Athenry project. Since graduation I have been working as a Junior Manager with DKS Construction in the States. When I return to Ireland, I plan to apply for a master’s programme in Building Information Modelling with Applied Management.

What are my career opportunities? Our graduates have great career prospects in Ireland and across the world. They work on site and/or in professional office environments with large and small building and civil engineering contractors, and project management practices.
