GMIT Prospectus 2021/22

Code: GA683 Level: 8 Code: GA675 Level: 7

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Agricultural Engineering (Level 8) Bachelor of Engineering in Agricultural Engineering (Level 7)

NEWLY Approved for Young Trained Farmer Status

What will I study?

Why study Agricultural Engineering The agri-food sector is one of Ireland's most important indigenous manufacturing sectors, accounting for the employment of around 170,000 people. Enterprise Ireland (EI) has identified Agricultural Machinery as one of the dominant engineering sub sectors within Irish Engineering, recognising this area as having significant growth potential in the coming years. If you have a particular interest in the design, manufacturing, operation and maintenance of agricultural machineries, then Agricultural Engineering is for you. Combining Agricultural Science and Mechanical Engineering with an emphasis on power, this degree is designed to deliver high-quality engineers to the agricultural and agri-food industry. Students will gain transferable knowledge and skills in the following areas: • Design • Manufacturing • Agricultural Sciences This degree is very hands-on with weekly practicals classes, workshop practice, individual and group projects as well as work placement experience. Over the duration of the programme, each student will receive, on average, 24 hours of tuition per week. Students will be based between the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at GMIT Galway campus and GMIT Mountbellew campus (at Mountbellew Agricultural College). The Level 8 programme has been approved as one of the qualifications which meets the requirements for Young Trained Farmer Status for the purpose of farm inheritance, grant aids, and tax exemptions. In order to comply with the requirements, students will complete an additional 5 credits per year. Entry Requirements: In addition to the Level 6/7 and Level 8 general entry requirements, candidates must have a minimum LC grade of O4/H7 in Mathematics.

Year 1: • Mathematics • Manufacturing Engineering • Computer-Aided Design • Learning Innovation Skills • Electrical Science • Agricultural Technology • Engineering Science • Animal and Crop Production Year 2: • Statics and Dynamics • Manufacturing Engineering • Mechanics and Dynamics of Machines • Mathematics • Power Hydraulics • Farm Management Safety and Law • Mechanics and Properties of Materials • Thermodynamics • Soil Science and Nutrient Management • Programming for Embedded Controllers • Grassland Production

Year 3: • Machine Design • Advanced Manufacturing Processes • Heat Transfer • Engineering Design • Power Hydraulics • Dairy Production • Food Science, Technology and Quality Assurance • Drystock Production

• Animal Nutrition and Breeding • Industrial Work Placement Year 4: • Major Project • Computer-Aided Engineering • Power Transmission • Farm Animal Health and Planning • The Engineer in Society • Electrical Machines • Manufacturing Automation • Maintenance and Reliability • Advanced Automation and Control • Sustainable Farming and the Environment

What are my career opportunities? It is envisaged that graduates from the programme will be employed in a wide diversity of agricultural engineering related disciplines both nationally and internationally, namely:

• Technical/engineering drafting, field technicians • Agricultural engineering design/systems design • Agricultural systems (destructive and non-destructive testing) • Agricultural processing, engineering sales, service, etc. • Cognate disciplines involving heavy machinery design (i.e. Forestry, Peat & Mining) • Bioenergy/biomass sector Follow-on Studies

Facilities at GMIT Mountbellew: • Dedicated CAD, electronics and hydraulics laboratories • Farm machinery and machinery workshops

GMIT honours (Level 8) qualifications are recognised worldwide for postgraduate entry. Furthermore, the Department of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering has strong research connections with local industries, and some graduates may have an opportunity to register on funded M.Sc., M. Eng., or PhD research programmes. Recognition by Professional Bodies It is envisaged that that the programme will be professionally accredited by Engineers Ireland.
