At the start of every semester, students can sign-up for an eight-week course in non- competitive activities such as aerobics, circuit training, kickboxing and yoga. And if playing pool is your game, then you’ll be happy to know that there are competitions offering great prizes run each semester. In order to manage the busy training and match playing schedules of these teams the college has appointed Development Officers to take care of the administration and logistics on behalf of the club members. Email: nigel.jennings@gmit.ie GAA Development GMIT has a full-time GAA Development Officer. He deals with the administration and development of Gaelic Games. Gaelic Games has the largest club membership within the college. The men’s senior football team competes in the Sigerson Cup, while the hurling team competes in the Fitzgibbon Cup. Camogie, ladies’ football and handball are also provided for. We have many developed links in the community to give our students access to facilities such as playing pitches and indoor courts for all team sports, all within easy reach of the campus and residences. The newly opened Leisure Complex at Lough Lannagh, with its eight-lane pool and state of the art facilities, is only five minutes walk from college and is situated beside the Castlebar Tennis club, with its array of indoor courts in its domed facility, and Castlebar Boxing Club. These facilities are all based on the shores of Lough Lannagh which through our link with Castlebar Urban Adventure Hub allows access to Kayaking, Dragon Boating, Stand up Paddling and Orienteering among other activities. The Mayo Campus is recognised as one of the leading institutes in the country for Outdoor Adventure activities, (The Surf club have just completed a three in a row of National titles), and the geographical location allows access to the best beaches, rivers and mountains. Clubs, Sports and Activities If you are interested in competing at inter-college level, there is a team for almost every sport at GMIT. We provide archery, basketball, cycling, Gaelic games, karate, kayaking, rugby, soccer, volleyball and windsurfing, to name but a few. If you are interested in being active, but entering competitions doesn’t appeal to you, you are provided for. Simply have fun by participating in any of our non-competitive clubs such as badminton, diving, equestrian, indoor soccer and table-tennis.
