High Performance Unit and Fitness Studio GMIT Galway Campus has a state-of-the-art High Performance Unit (HPU) and Fitness Studio. The HPU which has been developed in conjunction with the Sports and Exercise Science department facilitates Strength and Conditioning programming and testing for our highly competitive sports teams and individual athletes. This area is also the hub for fitness classes such as yoga and circuit training. Galwegians RFC – Galway GMIT Rugby Club has full use of the grounds and facilities of the local Galwegians club. These are available to our rugby team for both training and matches. These grounds consist of:

GMIT FALCONS In 2020 GMIT unveiled an exciting new identity for its sports

activities across all campuses, bringing student teams and individuals together under the one sports brand, ‘GMIT Falcons’ , for the first time in the history of the college. Central to the new identity is the falcon bird of prey which is a reflection of who we are and where we’re from. Conveying elements of agility, grace, speed and ferocity while the predominant shades of blue echo the traditional blue of the Connacht coat of arms. GMIT Falcons Sport, Societies and Activities are here to help you embark on a new journey in your life along with providing the opportunity for social interaction, new friendships and benefits of being part of a club and society. SPORTING FACILITIES In GMIT, we cater for a diverse range of sports. These sporting facilities are available to all students across the five campuses in Galway, Mayo, Letterfrack and Mountbellew. Galwegians RFC is located beside the GMIT Galway campus. Mervue United AFC – Galway

Mervue United is a highly successful local club, located within walking distance of the Galway campus. Mervue’s state-of-the-art facilities, including full size astro and grass pitches, are available to the Ladies’ and Men’s soccer clubs. This sharing arrangement facilitates the training and matchday needs of both clubs. Facilities available to GMIT students include:

Sports Hall – GMIT Galway campus GMIT Sports Hall accommodates the following sports:

• Full-sized basketball court with electronic score board • Four badminton courts • Full-sized volleyball court

• Two volleyball training courts • Indoor cricket court • Indoor soccer pitch

• A full-sized, FAI-approved 3G astro pitch • Three astro turf cages for training or five-a-side matches • FAI-approved full-sized grass pitch

• Three training grass pitches • Clubhouse with changing room and showers • Fully equipped gym

The Sports Hall also provides for other indoor sports including:

• Archery • Table tennis

• Karate • Boxing

• Cheerleading • Air soft

• Kickboxing

Dangan NUIG – Galway GMIT Athletics’ Club shares a state-of-the-art sports facility at Dangan with NUI Galway. Available to students is an international standard eight-lane synthetic track. The sports complex also has a variety of running trails around the perimeter. It also provides international standard jumping and throwing facilities. The track is located along the banks of the Corrib river at Upper Newcastle, Galway.

GMIT hosts many events including:

• Wheelchair soccer • Karate standardise

• Archery • Inter-varsities

• Bubble soccer

GAA – GMIT Galway Campus GMIT has a full size GAA pitch at the Galway campus, which is used for both training and competitive games. The GAA ground also has its own dressing rooms. GMIT has arrangements with several local GAA clubs which allows them to use their facilities. This agreement provides extra pitches when needed to meet the busy GAA schedule.
