GMIT Prospectus 2021/22

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS There are several ways to satisfy the entry requirements for GMIT. a ) Higher Certificates (Level 6) and Ordinary Bachelor Degrees (Level 7) The minimum Leaving Certificate entry requirement for all higher certificates (Level 6) and ab initio bachelor degrees (Level 7) programmes is Grade O6/H7 or better in five Leaving Certificate subjects including Mathematics and English or Irish with a minimum of 160 points. b) Honours Bachelor Degrees (Level 8)

The general minimum Leaving Certificate entry requirement is Grade O6/H7 or better in six Leaving Certificate subjects including English or Irish and Mathematics. Two of the six Leaving Certificate subjects must be passed in higher level papers at Grade H5 or higher with a minimum of 160 points.

Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Medical Science (GA785) Bachelor of Science (Honours) in General Nursing (GA880) and Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Psychiatric Nursing (GA882)

A science subject and an O5/H7 in Mathematics. A laboratory science subject (Biology, Chemistry, Physics), Physics and Chemistry ( joint) or Agricultural Science.

NOTE: Foundation level Maths is not accepted on any of the above programmes or any programmes within the School of Engineering. See section h) Foundation Level Mathematics (page 197) for further information.

For consideration for progression to nursing degree programmes, applicants must meet the following specific requirements. • A pass with FIVE distinctions in one of the following Linked QQI FET Level 5/6 awards: DCHSN/5M4349 (Nursing Studies) DCHSX/5M4468 (Community and Health Services) DHSXX/5M4339 (Healthcare Support) 5M3782 (Health Service Skills) • A pass with distinction in each of the following modules must be included: D20001/5N0749 (Anatomy and Physiology) D20012/5N4325 (Introduction to Nursing Theory and Practice) and D20032/5N1279 (Human Growth and Development) or C20006/5N2746 (Biology).

c) QQI Further Education and Training (FET) Awards A pass in any QQI FET Major award at Level 5 or 6 meets the entry requirements for Higher Certificate or Bachelor Degree (Level 6 or Level 7) programmes. [QQI FET Level 6 Major award holders are also eligible for admission to year two of approved GMIT programmes.] From 2020-21, QQI FET applicants for engineering programmes in GMIT must have completed awards including a Mathematics module (5N1833, 6N3395, 5N18396, 5N0556 or 5S2246) or LCE maths. A pass with distinction grade in at least three components in any QQI FET Major award at Level 5 or 6 meets the entry requirements for honours bachelor degrees (Level 8) with the exception of nursing degree programmes. NOTE: A FET qualification is not accepted for entry onto either the BSc (Hons) in Education (Design, Graphics & Construction) or the BEd (Honours) Art, Design and Graphics.
