Why Study B.Ed. Art, Design and Graphics? If you have a dream of becoming a post-primary teacher, have a flair for creativity and enjoy design and technical challenges, then this is a course tailor-made for you. This unique learning opportunity is designed to provide a pathway for students to teach both Art and Design and Communication Graphics in Irish secondary schools. Students will develop their creative skills and learn and apply new digital technologies to enable them to master these subjects. A strong practical focus and carefully designed projects and assignments ensure that students can engage with course content in a meaningful and comprehensive way. The theory and practice of teaching are core elements of the programme and students are afforded an opportunity each year during School Placement to develop their teaching skills in supportive and inclusive school environments. Small group sizes as well as the use of numerous and innovative teaching techniques and learning technologies will make for a varied and stimulating learning experience. Design-led projects focused on design, art techniques, CAD, and graphics ensure graduates are competent and confident in their role as a professional teacher. What will I study?

What are my Career Opportunities? Graduates of this highly specialised post-primary teacher education programme can apply to the Teaching Council for qualifications to teach Visual Art and Design and Communication Graphics to Leaving Certificate honours Level. They can also apply to teach Art and Graphics within the new Junior Cycle curriculum. Graduates will also have a suite of skills that are highly sought-after including design, 3D modelling, and visual and graphic communication. Follow-on Studies On completion of Bachelor of Education (Honours) in Art, Design and Graphics graduates can apply for post-graduate programmes in related areas. Other key information • Applicants must have a minimum H5 in one of the Leaving Certificate subjects of Art or Design & Communication Graphics • Vetting Requirement: All places are offered on this programme subject to satisfactory Garda vetting clearance. • This programme is designed to meet the requirements for Teaching Council post- primary registration and is going through the normal accreditation process.

Work Experience Students on this programme undertake School Placement within each year of the programme in a range of educational settings, but predominantly within Post-Primary Schools. Students are provided with an opportunity to gradually develop their teaching skills within a supportive framework with tuition and guidance provided by educational experts including GMIT lecturers, practicing teachers and school principals.
