Why study Physics & Instrumentation? The progression of modern technology is largely based on fundamental physics research and instrumentation development. Indeed, innovation in all areas of science, engineering, measurement, and technology rely on the development of new instrumentation and measurement techniques. The aim of this programme is to satisfy those who have an interest in fundamental science and present them with opportunities to find rewarding careers. Throughout the programme there is an emphasis on practical work and projects. Projects are often based on individual students’ interests, and have included e.g. medical instrumentation development, remote measurements using drones, building electronic musical equipment, investigating solar cells, and many more. Note: There is no need to have studied physics at Leaving Certificate, as the fundamentals of all science subjects are delivered in year one. What will I study? Year 1: • Physics • Chemistry • Biology • Mathematics • Skills Innovation In the Year 1 physics module, the main three topics covered in lectures and laboratories are Optics, Mechanics, and Electromagnetism. Note: There is no need to have studied any particular Science subject at Leaving Certificate level, as the fundamentals of all science subjects are delivered in year one. Year 2: • Physics • Electronic Instrumentation • Control and Instrument Systems • Digital Systems & Interfacing • Programming • Technical Project • Mathematics • Astronomy & Astronomical Optics* • Green Energy Technologies* *Students can elect to undertake a module relevant to Marine Instrumentation or Computation. Year 3: • Relativity & Quantum & • Mechanics & Thermodynamics Electromagnetism • Computerised Instrument Systems • Advanced Electronic Instrumentation • Imaging for Medical & Industrial • Robotics & Automation Applications • Metrology & Standards & Calibration • Instrument Design Team Project • Three to six months work placement or project.

A degree qualification in Physics & Instrumentation opens many career options. A few popular examples would include calibration technicians, medical physicists, and opportunities in any sector that uses instrumentation (e.g. pharmaceutical, medical device, electronics, biotechnology, green energy, marine sectors etc.). Furthermore, one of the key skills developed in a physics-based degree is the ability to assess and solve problems; this is a skill that is transferable to many jobs that are not directly physics based.
Barry Christy I really enjoyed my time in the P&I programme in GMIT. The course strikes a good balance between lecture-based material, and practical lab / project work. The class sizes are generally quite small, meaning that lecturers have time to give individual support.
Graduates from this programme have no problems in finding interesting jobs. On completion of my BSc, I immediately found an excellent job in the Vision Technology & Expertise Group in Valeo Vision. Since then, I have taken the opportunity to follow a passion of mine and move to the Marine Institute where I am a Science & Technical Officer working on the development of marine instrumentation. I’m also considering the option of carrying out further studies in either an MSc or PhD.
