Why Study Outdoor Education?

The Outdoor Education programmes respond to an increasing demand for professionals in the adventure tourism market, in environmental education and in the outdoor education sector. The programmes at GMIT provide a coherent, multidisciplinary career path for those wishing to pur- sue a varied and stimulating career. Graduates will find employment as instructors in both adventure and outdoor education centres and other organisations offering adventure sports as part of their programmes. There are over 100 adventure centres in Ireland including centres in Connaught such as Petersburg OEC, Killary Adventure Company, and the Delphi Adventure Centre. There are job opportunities as instructors and development workers in youth organisations and positions in schools offering outdoor education programmes and Further Education. There are also job opportunities as outdoor instructors within residential childcare centres and social care organisations. Many of the Outdoor Education graduates from GMIT are currently working in set- tings where they are facilitating personal and social development using outdoor activities. These organisations include Foróige, Crosscare, Youth Diversion and Justice Projects, COPE, Youthreach, Barretstown, Outward Bound, Sail Training Ireland and School Completion Officers. Within the adventure tourism market there is a wide range of positions available such as walking guides, canoeing guides, and cycling tour guides. There is an increase in opportunities in nature kindergartens, Forest Schools, ecotourism and in nature and ecotheraphy. Within all these organisations, graduates have the appropriate education and training to proceed to co-ordinator and management level.
