GMIT Prospectus 2021/22

Why Study Heritage, Tourism? Tourism

Heritage Heritage is a discipline that explores who we are as a people, our history, our cultures, our society, and the environment in which we live. It includes almost anything that one generation hands down to the next, or anything from the past that people identify with. It involves the use of the past in the present – in commemorations, conservation plans, museum exhibitions, local economies, national identities, and tourist attractions, to name a few. Today, the Heritage sector supports 40,000 jobs in Ireland and accounts for €1.5 billion revenue annually. It plays a vital role in Ireland’s tourism product, where 60% of all international visitors visit at least one Heritage site while in Ireland. Studying Heritage Studies, History & Geography or Culture & Environment in GMIT will provide you with a broad-based knowledge of the built, cultural and natural heritages of Ireland and Europe. Students are exposed to every facet of the sector, partaking in regular field trips in Ireland, and abroad. This learning will provide you with an understanding of the role that heritage resource management plays in the safeguarding of national monuments, architecture, artefacts, archives, cultural landscapes, habitats, flora, and fauna. “A people without the knowledge of their past, origin & culture is like a tree with no roots.” – Marcus Garvey

Tourism is the world’s largest, and most diverse service industry. It is an industry that encompasses many facets; such as transport services, leisure, natural and built attractions, hospitality, bars and restaurants, festival and events; to name but a few. In Ireland, Tourism employs almost 250,000 people, playing a vital role in the overall Irish economy. Ireland is regularly voted as one of the best countries in the world to visit. Studying Tourism in GMIT will equip you with the necessary skills, knowledge and experience to pursue an exciting career in this dynamic industry, both at home or abroad. Students are exposed to every facet of the industry, partaking in regular field trips in Ireland, and abroad. This learning is supported by two work placements, the first in Ireland and the second in an international destination. Graduates of the Tourism programmes also qualify as a ‘Regional Tour Guide’, a certificate awarded by Fáilte Ireland. “The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page.” – Saint Augustine
