The campuses in Galway City, Castlebar, Letterfrack and Mountbellew each have a different feel, and a different story to tell...

GMIT CAMPUS LOCATIONS

Spread out over counties Galway and Mayo in the west of Ireland, our five campuses offer unique locations in which to study. Our students thrive because they can experience an excellent study-life balance, all at a reasonable cost of living.

GALWAy CITy

Galway city is home to the main GMIT Galway campus, and GMIT’s Centre for Creative Arts and Media. Nationally and internationally renowned as the friendliest city in Europe (Travel + Leisure 2015), Galway is so much more than a scenic city-by-the-sea. Galway has a spirited population of 75,000 people, with students making up at least a quarter of that. Although the 4th largest city in Ireland, Galway has lost none of its medieval charm. Everything from Michelin-starred restaurants, to open air markets, pubs, theatres, live music events, and an eclectic bunch of personalities, keeps Galway city buzzing, by day and by night. And when the vibrancy of city life is all too much, why not escape for a break and head a little further west to Connemara, the most unspoiled countryside you will ever see. Or, head south to explore the Burren and Cliffs of Moher in County Clare.

Established in 1972 and overlooking Galway Bay, the purpose-built campus on the Dublin Road in Galway City is the largest of GMIT’s five campuses. This campus is one of Galway City’s iconic landmarks, due to the three distinctive sail-shaped copper panels at the front of the main building. This unique design helps identify the Institute as an innovator in modern technology and serves the practical purpose of housing the Library and IT Centre. A huge variety of courses are available at the Galway campus – everything from business and science, to engineering and tourism.

GMIT Centre for the Creative Arts & Media (CCAM), Monivea Road, Galway

GALWAy CITy A Destination for Creators and Artists

Galway city has long been known as a centre for creativity, arts, culture, music, drama and more. The city is alive with arts and cultural festivals, including Galway Film Fleadh and the Galway International Arts Festival in July, The Cúirt International Festival of Literature in April, and Baboró, an International Arts Festival for Children, in October. In 2014, Galway was designated a UNESCO City of Film in recognition of its strong media output. Galway is now one of only eight film cities in the world to achieve this much sought-after status. A city with such a strong creative ethos is the perfect setting for GMIT’s Centre for the Creative Arts and Media, providing students with the opportunity to engage with creative communities all year round.

GMIT’s Centre for the Creative Arts & Media (CCAM) is also located close to Galway City centre, on the Monivea Road. A GMIT campus since 1994, CCAM is based in beautiful old buildings that date back to the 1930s. The award-winning library is constructed with Irish oak displaying beautiful craftsmanship in keeping with surrounding architecture. CCAM is a hive of creative activity, and is home to a number of organisations and enterprises alongside the courses in: • Design (graphic design & illustration, animation & game design, industrial design, and fashion & textile design) • Contemporary Art (incorporating painting, print making, photography, ceramics, sculpture, digital media) • Film & Documentary (editing, screenwriting, production design, 4D design, audio production and cinematography) • The new teaching programme in Art, Design and Graphics.

GMIT Mayo Campus, Westport Road, Castlebar

In 1994, the GMIT Mayo campus opened its doors to students in the west wing of St. Mary’s Hospital in Castlebar, less than a 10-minute walk from the town centre. It continued to expand, and today is a thriving 3rd level campus with over 1,000 students. The entire building has been sensitively restored to retain as much as possible of the original architecture, while providing the modern facilities and services required for students and staff. GMIT Mayo campus specialises in nursing, health sciences, social care, history and geography and outdoor education courses. There are also numerous courses and facilities available for adults wishing to get back into education both full-time and part-time, delivered in a blended approach. GMIT – Working Towards a Technological University The new Technological University (TU) for the West and North-West of Ireland will be one of the largest multi-campus universities on the island, bringing together students, enterprise and communities spanning a unique geographical region in transition on the periphery of Europe which has a predominantly dispersed rural population. The TU will be a leader in the provision of access to Higher Education by offering programmes from pre-degree to doctoral level on campus, online or as remote learning. As a TU, we will deepen collaborative partnerships with Further and Higher Education institutions and organisations in the public and private sectors. As one entity, the new distinctive Technological University will act in a coherent manner supporting the needs of enterprises, especially SMEs, across the region through collaborative research and enabling technology transfer to support economic and social prosperity. It will provide research-informed teaching and access to emerging technologies for all learners. The TU will have the critical mass and academic depth to attract, educate, nurture and retain talent in the West, North-West and cross-border region and will strengthen and benefit our region socially, economically and culturally. As a TU of scale, quality and impact, we will have greater

capacity for collaboration with international partners and our graduates will have excellent employment potential nationally and internationally. The Connacht Ulster Alliance (CUA) of GMIT, LYIT and IT Sligo has made significant progress towards meeting the

Maintaining and Protecting the GMIT Student Experience During the COVID-19 Crisis

During the 2020/21 academic year GMIT staff are well prepared to deliver a great learning experience for all our students. Lectures will be online, with on-site activities for practical work and some tutorials. We are planning for a return to normal face-to-face delivery from September 2021, subject to HSE and the Department of Education and Skills guidelines.

The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff is our priority. We continue to follow the advice of the HSE and the Department of Education and Skills about ongoing protective measures against the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Please refer to www.gmit.ie/covid for up to date information and FAQs for students.

Ag Cothú agus ag Cosaint Eispéaras na Mac Léinn i GMIT le linn na géarchéime Covid-19

Le linn na bliana acadúla 2020/21 tá foireann GMIT sár-ullmhaithe chun eispéaras foghlama den scoth a chur ar fáil dár mic léinn ar fad. Beidh léachtaí ar líne, le gníomhaíochtaí ar an gcampas d’obair phraiticiúil agus do roinnt ranganna teagaisc. Tá muid ag ullmhú agus ag súil go mbeidh muid ag filleadh ar an ngnáthsheachadadh aghaidh ar aghaidh ó mhí Mheán Fómhair 2021, ag brath ar threoirlínte

FSS (Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhíse Sláinte) agus na Roinne Oideachais agus Scileanna. Is é an rud is tábhachtaí dúinn ná sláinte agus sábháilteacht na mac léinn agus an lucht foirne. Tá muid fós ag cloí le comhairle FSS agus na Roinne Oideachais agus Scileanna maidir le bearta cosanta leanúnacha le srian a choinneáil ar scaipeadh an choróinvíris (Covid-19).

Tá eolas suas chun dáta agus CCanna (ceisteanna coitianta) do mhic léinn le fáil ar www.gmit.ie/covid

Face Covering Please be advised that you must bring your own reusable face covering when aending or visiting GMIT during the next academic year (2020-2021). Information on the use of face coverings, and instructions on how to make your own face covering, is available at hps://www2.hse.ie/conditions/coronavirus/face-masks-disposable-gloves.html

Welcome! On behalf of all the staff in GMIT I am delighted to welcome you to the Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology. GMIT is renowned for being a student-centred organisation, where students regularly comment on the excellent staff-student relationships. Our Strategic Plan (2019-2023) has a strong focus on building communities as well as enhancing the individual experience. Our Core Values underpin our ethos and guide our thinking and actions – they speak of a nurturing, respectful and egalitarian culture. Our vision is to provide you, our students, with a transformative university experience, empowering our graduates to fully contribute to the social, economic and cultural betterment of society. This is appropriate now more than ever in the context of our ambition to become a Technological University with our consortium partners IT Sligo and Letterkenny IT. Our graduates have an excellent track record in obtaining employment and are highly sought after by employers due to the nature of the applied learning we facilitate during your time with us. Over 90% of our graduates are in employment or further study nine months after graduating. As a society we have faced many challenges in the last year, due to the Covid-19 global pandemic, and as a society we will continue work towards full recovery. In GMIT we have been innovative in ensuring that we continue to deliver an outstanding educational experience through a blended approach – ensuring the flexibility of an innovative online experience while continuing to support many on-campus activities including our strong practical focus. As you transition to higher education, we help you along the way with a five-week welcome programme followed by peer-mentoring supports. This is what we refer to as the First Year Experience and I strongly recommend that you engage in all of these targeted initiatives designed to support you on your journey with us. More detailed information is included in this prospectus. We are also fortunate in GMIT with the strong relationship between our wonderful Students Union and our management team. Through the Students Union you will have opportunities to join a wide range of clubs and societies. I can’t emphasise enough how important this can be to help make new friends and form new bonds, although it is of course important to keep adequate time for study and course work! Throughout your time in GMIT all we ask of you is that you make your best effort, and should you need support to deal with a particular challenge don’t be afraid to ask. We have an excellent Student Services team with experience of dealing with all of life’s challenges. Thank you for considering GMIT and I look forward to meeting you on your journey with us!

STUDENT LIFE AT GMIT

Life in GMIT - The Student Experience

Studying in GMIT is not just about the qualification and skills you graduate with. Sometimes, it is the experiences you have along the way that will ultimately shape you as a graduate and as a person.

STUDENT COMMUNITY GMIT has a vibrant community of over 6,700 students. Students come from all over Ireland, and from overseas locations such as China, Saudi Arabia and mainland Europe.

FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT You will find that GMIT offers students a friendly learning environment, with an excellent rapport between students and lecturers. Smaller class sizes gives you a chance to get to know your lecturers and classmates well and facilitate learning.

STUDENT SUPPORT Adjusting to life in college can be one of the biggest differences between second and third level education. GMIT has a number of supports in place to help you adjust to college life: • PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) is a scheme specifically for first year students. This scheme helps first year students to support each other and learn co- operatively under the guidance of a trained student from the second, third, or fourth year of the same course. • Academic supports are available at GMIT in the form of the Academic Writing Centre, Maths Support Centre, and Information Skills Training. • Access & Disability, Student Health Unit, Chaplaincy, Counselling, Careers services and the Students Services administrative support team are available to make the transition to college easier and provide ‘peace of mind’ that support is available if you need it. • The Students’ Union also assists students in areas such as grants, timetables, exams, lectures, personal issues, welfare, accommodation, and more.

STUDENT CLUBS, SOCIETIES AND ACTIVITIES One of the most exciting, rewarding and fun aspects of GMIT is the opportunity to become involved in some of the various clubs and societies on campus. Geing involved with a club or society connects you to people and opportunities, widens your circle of friends, and can help you grow in confidence. There are over 70 clubs to choose from – so make sure you join at least one.

VOLUNTEERING & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT GMIT students are involved in a range of civic engagement and volunteering projects across all major disciplines. Students have an opportunity to undertake a five credit module in Civic Engagement, which appoints students in responsible and challenging actions in a range of non- profit organisations. Students can also apply for the GMIT President's Thrive Award for Volunteering. To be considered for this award, students must volunteer for 25 hours which can be done with outside organisations or on certain initiatives within GMIT. GMIT liaises with Volunteer Galway to offer volunteering opportunities for this award.

STUDENT RESOURCES GMIT campuses are well equipped to make sure that you have everything you need on site – from libraries, sports facilities and IT centres, to the ever-popular meeting point of the canteen/coffee shop. The Dublin Road campus in Galway City also has a number of training restaurants, where you can enjoy three-course meals at discounted prices.

HEALTHY CAMPUS runs several initiatives to promote Positive Health and Wellbeing among the GMIT Community. In January 2020, we introduced GMIT's Clean Air (No Smoking or Vaping) Campus Policy. Ongoing Healthy Campus activities include staff and student choirs, delivery of consent workshops, exercise challenges such as the Marchathon as well as regular promotions in relation to positive mental health, quiing smoking, healthy nutrition and reducing the use of alcohol and drugs. www.gmit.ie/about/gmit-healthy-campus

GMIT Academic Writing Centre The purpose of the GMIT Academic Writing Centre is to enable students to fulfil their potential in the academic writing tasks which are part of their course work. The Centre offers focused academic writing tuition to students of the Institute at all levels, in all years (including postgraduate), and across all disciplines. The tuition available takes the form of pre-bookable, thirty-minute, one-to-one sessions, directed by individual student need. The GMIT Academic Writing Centre is located in the Library Training Room (Room 973), on the ground floor of the Dublin Road campus. To avail of the services of the Academic Writing Centre: • Pre-book a session, up to two days in advance (Pre-book up to 24 hours in advance for Mayo Academic Writing Centre). • Have ready, for the session, a copy of the task as set by your lecturer and any writing guidelines or templates issued by your lecturer or department. • Bring, to the session, the relevant work-in-progress: this may consist of initial notes or ideas, preliminary research, partial drafts, or near-completed assignments. • Please note that the Academic Writing Centre offers practical, guided tuition in all aspects of academic writing, and should not be misunderstood as an editing or proofreading service. GMIT Maths Support Centre The GMIT Maths Support Centre was established to support the learning of mathematics by students outside of their Mathematics classes. The Centre, located in the Galway campus library, opens for two evenings per week during term. Students can use the tutorial resources of the centre on a drop-in basis without prior booking. Group tutorials are also possible. The tutors facilitate student learning of a particular mathematics topic by working through a specific problem or problems with the student. Overseen by the Institute's mathematics lecturers, the Centre is not intended to substitute for student attendance at the regular timetabled mathematics lectures and tutorials.
